Radioactive waste on lakes a terrorist's dream

Officials from the Government Accounting office are showing renewed concern about the potential for radioactive waste to get into the hands of terrorists, who might theoretically explode a device containing the requisite material and create a new 9/11 panic.

They are right to be concerned, especially considering how long the dithering has gone on to safeguard the huge stockpiles of this deadly stuff that is already virtually available for the terrorists' taking.

For decades now, Congress has allowed the national debate over the long-term storage of spent nuclear fuels, like those stored at Palisades, only 60 miles to Muskegon's south, to spin continuously in a circle. The result is that casks of deadly radioactive material, with half-lives measured in centuries, essentially lie exposed in place, vulnerable to either terrorism, mishap or natural disaster. ...
