Taliban’s War on Pakistan: Lessons to Learn, Options to Pursue Dr Walid Phares

The worst events in this war have yet to happen. Analysts must focus on the lessons learned so far so that the worrying projections can be accompanied with parallel policy suggestions.
.... Based on these findings, the following are strategic recommendations for the U.S. Administration to consider seriously:
A. As Pakistan’s armed forces and its government are waging a counter campaign on the Taliban, Washington must refrain from regurgitating the myth of “cutting deals with the good Taliban” as an exit strategy for Afghanistan. Such a hallucination would crumble the determination of anti-Taliban forces in Afghanistan and would weaken the resolve of the Pakistanis engaged in their own national counter terrorism campaign against the Taliban.
B. The Obama Administration must help Zardari’s government discretely and at the demand of the latter. U.S. and Pakistani leaders should coordinate efforts without exposing this cooperation to jihadist propaganda
C. The Obama Administration must rapidly extend resources to General McChrystal in Afghanistan so that the pincer movement against the regional Taliban can happen at the same time. Now that the Pakistanis are on the offensive in Waziristan, NATO and Afghan forces must take the offensive on the other side of the border. The Taliban must not be enabled to fight one adversary at a time, by massing all their resources in two countries against one foe then move to the next.
I am sure U.S. and NATO strategists and Pakistani decision makers have this in mind. But we need to make sure U.S. decision makers do not have other plans in mind. Otherwise, if the pincer strategy is not performed, we may lose not one but two countries in the region to the jihadists – one of them being already nuclear.

Do we wish to wait until those cemeteries and morgues, both outside and inside Iran, to which Eliot Cohen referred, are filled not with hundreds but with hundreds of thousands or millions of dead and maimed, or do we act now, to “provide for the common defense” as our Constitution requires? For too long we have relied upon wishful thinking and concessional unilateralism to curry favor with the Mullahs. We do not need to find a “smoking gun” among the nuclear facilities in Natanz or Qom – we already have it, in the very words of the Iranians themselves for the past thirty years. We ignore this at our peril.

A bipartisan commission created by Congress is reporting today that the Obama administration needs to pay more attention to the urgent and immediate threat of biological terrorism.
The United States is failing to address the threat of bioterrorism, according to leaders of a bipartisan panel that warns that an attack worldwide is more likely than not by the end of 2013.
The Commission on the Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation and Terrorism, created by Congress in 2007, said in an interim report Wednesday that the administration and lawmakers have underfunded efforts to develop vaccines and drugs and have not named a high-level National Security Council appointee to improve biodefenses.

A Toronto-area imam is under fire for using derogatory language against Jews and Christians, calling for Allah to "destroy" the enemies of Islam from within and calling on God to "damn" the "infidels." The address, given last Friday by Imam Saed Rageah at the Abu Huraira Centre and then posted on YouTube (watch it above), is an attack on those who have been calling for a ban on the niqab and burka, both of which cover the faces of women.
"Allah protect us from the fitna [sedition] of these people; Allah protect us from the evil agenda of these people; Allah destroy them from within themselves, and do not allow them to raise their heads in destroying Islam." [...]
The Abu Huraira Centre attracts about 800 to 1,000 people to a typical Friday service. A man who worked at the centre said that many women who attend only wear the hijab, which covers the head, and do not wear any covering on their faces. [...]
Throughout the 35-minute speech he uses the word "kuffar" to describe non-Muslims.That accords with Koran 3:28 and 5:51, both of which tell Muslims not to take unbelievers as allies.
In referring to those Muslims who would seek allies outside the Muslim community to bring about legislation that would ban face coverings, the imam said: "You will see a lot of them going to the kuffar, taking them as friends and allies. The wrath of Allah is upon them. If they were true believers they would never take them as allies."...

US plans big pay cuts at bailout firms

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration plans to order companies that received huge U.S. government bailouts last year to sharply cut the compensation of their highest paid executives, according to a person familiar with the decision.
The seven companies that received the most assistance will have to cut the annual salaries of their 25 highest-paid executive by an average of about 90 percent from last year, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because it has not been announced.
This person said Wednesday that the Treasury Department will announce the deep pay cuts within the next few days.
Kenneth Feinberg, the special master at Treasury appointed by Obama to handle compensation issues at the seven firms getting exceptional assistance from the government's $700 billion financial bailout package, is making the pay decisions.
The seven companies are: Bank of America Corp., American International Group Inc., Citigroup Inc., General Motors, GMAC, Chrysler and Chrysler Financial.
Total compensation for the top executives at the seven firms will decline, on average, by about 50 percent, according to the person familiar with the administration's decision.
At the financial products division of AIG, the giant insurance company which has received taxpayer assistance valued at more than $180 billion, no top executive will receive more than $200,000 in total compensation, the person familiar with Feinberg's plan said. The administration also will warn AIG that it must fulfill a commitment to significantly reduce the $198 million in bonuses promised to employees in its financial services division, the arm of the company whose risky trades caused its downfall.
The pay restrictions for all seven companies will require any executive seeking more than $25,000 in special benefits -- things such as country club memberships, private planes and company cars -- to get permission for those perks from the government.
Feinberg's decisions on pay come after administration officials voiced sharp criticism in recent days of the plans of Wall Street firms to pay huge bonuses at a time when the country is still coping with rising unemployment and the effects of the recession.
Obama senior adviser David Axelrod called the bonuses "offensive" on Sunday.
"They ought to think through what they are doing and they ought to understand that a year ago a lot of these institutions were teetering on the brink and the United States government and taxpayers came to their defense," Axelrod said in an appearance on ABC television's "This Week."

Intelligence agencies warn against terror attacks planned by Hezbollah against Israeli and American targets in Turkey, according to a report published on the Turkish news website "Haberturk".
According to the report, Hezbollah is looking to attack Israeli tourists, Israeli vessels and airplanes, as well as synagogues in Turkey. Citizens are asked to take the necessary precautions.
In addition, Turkish police warned its units in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, saying Hezbollah might have already gathered intelligence ahead of a possible attack on Israeli and American institutions in the three major cities.
According to the website, the attacks are planned in retaliation for the assassination of Hezbollah commander Imad Mugniyah in February 2008, and are masterminded by a man identified as Abbas Hossein Zakr on behalf of Hezbollah.
Israeli security and diplomatic sources were briefed on the threats following a request made by Ynet, and have yet to comment on the reports.

FP: Dave Gaubatz, congrats on your book Muslim Mafia. The book is causing quite a bit of controversy. Tell us what the book is about in general and what is now going on.
Gaubatz: Thank you Jamie.
First I would like to thank everyone involved in the extensive research to make the book possible, the co-author Paul Sperry, and WND. I believe the book speaks for itself, showing CAIR Executives involvement in terrorist ties.
You ran a great review by Daniel Pipes of the book the other day here [4].
Naturally and fully expected, CAIR is on the defensive. Instead of addressing the numerous factual pieces of intelligence showing their support of the Islamic terrorist ideology, they do exactly as their ‘internal documents’ indicate. They begin intimidation, extortion, blackmail, and other related threats to silence their critics. These tactics have always worked for them for 15 years. Unfortunately for them they have finally met someone who knows how they play their game. I am not boasting but I was trained by the elite Federal Agency of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI) and we are tenfold better at protecting national security than they are at supporting terrorism against America.
FP: CAIR is not hiding their displeasure with you. Do you feel physically threatened?
Gaubatz: I did not hide from terrorists in Iraq and there will never be a day I will hide in America from terrorists or their supporters. The day when Americans begin hiding from terrorists is the day we have lost our country and our children’s future.
I have always conducted my research in a legal and professional manner and the truth will always prevail. Maybe I am ‘old fashioned’ but I love my country and while others are intimidated by CAIR and their supporters, I am not. Americans need to be proud of our country and keep in mind many of the CAIR Executives and their supporters are not even U.S. citizens, and many of the ones who are do not (according to their own documents) pledge allegiance to America. Simply residing here does not give anyone the right to advocate the destruction of America.
FP: Let’s talk about some of the charges that CAIR is making against you. CAIR is accusing you of being an “Islamophobe.”
Gaubatz: I owe my life to Muslims from Iraq who risked their lives for me and many Americans in 2003. The family of Mohammed Rehaief (Iraqi lawyer who rescued Private Jessica Lynch in Nasiriyah, Iraq) are examples of Muslims who truly represent the Islamic people. They saved my life on several occasions and I had the opportunity to rescue their family from Al Qaeda who had threatened their lives.
Further I have always advised all children are innocent and I (like many American troops) would have given my life for them in Iraq. During many of my lectures I have informed people they should not fear the Islamic people, but have every right to be an ‘Islamic Scholar Phobe.’
There are numerous Islamic scholars in America who have openly called for the destruction of America and Israel. There are many Imams who openly distribute violent material in their mosques and Islamic Centers and they are allowed by many ‘liberal’ elected officials to do so. Somehow they believe calling for the death of innocent men, women, and children are covered under the First Amendment to our Constitution. I disagree as do millions of Americans.
FP: CAIR has advised that you have stated President Obama is Muslim.
Gaubatz: Everyone should always keep in mind CAIR leaders are taught to ‘twist’ words and statements of their targets (reference the CAIR document titled ‘hit list’ in the Muslim Mafia book). I have talked with hundreds of Islamic leaders and reviewed the materials in their mosques. A common Islamic belief is that ‘ALL’ humans are born Muslim and it is the fault of negligent parents who turn them into Jews and Christians.
Readers can ask Yusef Estes who is a prominent Islamic leader and frequent guest of Dar al Hijrah, Falls Church, VA. Estes was the primary witness to my ‘pseudo’ conversion to Islam a couple of years ago at Dar al Hijrah. Estes immediately informed me Muslims do not use the term converting to Islam. He advised people ‘revert’ back to Islam and explained the reasoning as I described above. Readers should know by now if I say something it can be verified. In this case I have an audio recording of my pseudo ‘conversion’ to Islam and my discussion with Estes at Dar Al Hijrah.
FP: CAIR has advised that you and your researchers illegally obtained the documents from their National office.
Gaubatz: CAIR’s Nihad Awad, Hooper and Saylor may have forgotten many of their conversations they had with several of my researchers. I can easily remind them in court with video and audio footage. The CAIR leaders were going to destroy documents related to criminal and national security interests. The materials were being shredded and ‘wiped’ clean from their computers. Unlike former ‘Enron’ employees I would never allow intelligence related to the destruction of our country to be destroyed by terrorist supporters. Anyone who would should question their own loyalty to our country and our children. I highly encourage investigative reporters to conduct an extensive review of why the CAIR Virginia and CAIR Maryland offices closed.
FP: Do you have plans on conducting further first-hand research and can you clarify when the researchers finished their research within CAIR?
Gaubatz: I have never stopped conducting first-hand research on Islamic terrorist groups operating in America. As long as our children’s futures are in jeopardy I will continue.
FP: Any recommendations for our elected officials and law enforcement?
Gaubatz: America has the best law enforcement in the world. The ‘street level’ officers want to protect America and do their jobs, but unfortunately many of their Directors have become ‘stooges’ for CAIR. I recommend the Directors of these brave officers either do their jobs or get jobs being ‘lackeys’ for CAIR or ISNA. America needs leadership not ‘lackeys.’
Pertaining to our elected officials. They need to decide if they support an American who served his country for 23.5 years, risked his life in Iraq for people of all races, religions and cultures, served his Presidents both Republican and Democratic, held our nations highest security clearances, and has evidence to verify anything I have ever written or said. Or they can support organizations that advocate the destruction of our country and the futures of our children. I give my utmost thanks to our elected officials who are supporting my research. They are America’s true heroes.
FP: Any words for CAIR or their supporters?
Gaubatz: I have always said I look forward to the day when CAIR Executives or any of their supporters and I can put everything on the table in a court of law (U.S., not Sharia). CAIR is afraid of the truth and will fold before this ever happens. The Executives should get with their attorneys, let their egos not play into their decisions, and reveal to them their complete involvement in their support of terrorist groups, their blackmail and intimidation tactics of small and large U.S. companies, of people, and the negative statements they have made toward ‘one another’ to my researchers. I have no problem reminding them.

A 27-year-old man from Sudbury has been arrested on charges he planned terrorism attacks inside and outside the United States, including a plot to use automatic weapons to open fire at shoppers and emergency responders in shopping mall attacks, federal prosecutors said today.
Tarek Mehanna, of 6 Fairhaven Circle, is accused of conspiring with Ahmad Abousamra and others to obtain the automatic weapons needed to carry out a mall ambush in which they planned to open fire at random, said Acting U.S. Attorney Michael K. Loucks.
The plot included plans to fire at emergency responders, but was abandoned because the men could not obtain the weapons, authorities said.
Prosecutors also allege the men discussed participating in violent Jihad against American interests and their desire to die on the "battlefield."...
Is alternative to dollar in works? Plan for 'Special Drawing Rights' creates competition for reserve currency

The administration of President Barack Obama, without congressional authorization, is advancing a plan that could end the use of the U.S. dollar as the world reserve currency by setting up International Monetary Fund Special Drawing Rights to compete.
The move comes as the dollar heads toward a 14-month low of $1.50/euro and as some top fund managers, including some of President Obama's top financial supporters, worry the decline will continue as long as Obama depends on China to fund trillion dollar budget deficits.
It is Obama's promise to participate in a G20 nations agreement by giving $250 billion to the IMF to set up the alternative reserve currency that now has been documented in the final communiqué of the London meeting, according to the G20 website.
Plans for the dollar alternative are coming into play just as a former science adviser to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher says the real purpose of the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen on Dec. 7-18 is to use global warming hype as a pretext to lay the foundation for a one-world government.
"At [the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in] Copenhagen this December, weeks away, a treaty will be signed," Lord Christopher Monckton told a Minnesota Free Market Institute audience recently at Bethel University in St. Paul.
"Your president will sign it. Most of the Third World countries will sign it, because they think they're going to get money out of it. Most of the left-wing regimes from the European Union will rubber stamp it. Virtually nobody won't sign it," he said.
At G20.org, a report under "The London Summit 2009" reveals the LondonSummit.gov.uk/en/ site where "Point 5" of the final communiqué says the G20 agreed to allocate that amount to Special Drawing Rights in a move calculated to provide the liquidity needed to position SDRs as a dollar alternative in international trade.
"I think the dollar is now under question," billionaire investor George Soros told CNBC during the G20 summit in London, noting that Obama agreed with the G20 to utilize the IMF to fund a "one-world currency" dollar alternative for international trade.
Soros, one of presidential candidate Obama's leading financial backers, also has launched a new attack against the dollar by calling on China to stop pegging Chinese currency to the dollar, a move that would cause the dollar to fall in value.

Attacking Fox News and defending President Barack Obama is a family affair for Anita Dunn, the White House communications director who has blasted Fox as an arm of the Republican Party and talked about "controlling" the news media.
Documents concerning Obama that the White House has refused to release to the public include his long-form birth certificate and his passport records, as well as other records that may possibly be relevant, such as records regarding Obama's possible adoption by his Indonesian stepfather or college application and tuition financial aid records which would reveal whether Obama was ever registered as a foreign student.
WND previously has reported that Federal Election Commission records show $1,352,378.95 in payments were made by Obama for America to Perkins Coie while the law firm was representing President Obama in various court cases which have sought to obtain the president's long-form birth certificate to determine if he is a "natural born" citizen under Article Two, Section 1 of the Constitution.
Obama for America, Obama's 2008 political campaign, merged with the Democratic National Committee in January and is now known as Organizing for America. This grassroots army that some refer to as "Obama 2.0" continues to solicit financial contributions on the BarackObama.com website. Bauer, a Democratic Party partisan, has a long history of defending Democratic Party presidential hopefuls.
A biography for Bauer posted on the Perkins Coie website indicates he was general counsel to the Democratic National Committee during the presidential campaign of Sen. John Kerry and that he served as counsel to Sen. Tom Daschle, the Democratic leader in the impeachment trial proceedings of President Bill Clinton.
During the 2008 presidential campaign, Bauer functioned as an "attack lawyer," threatening with FEC complaints groups wanting to run anti-Obama television ads.
Also during the 2008 campaign, Bauer intervened on behalf of Obama to block the California-based American Leadership Project from running a television ad campaign over support from unions, including the Service Employees International Union.
Again, Bauer filed a complaint with the FEC alleging that the union-funded television campaign the American Leadership Project planned to run in Indiana against Obama was illegal under federal election laws.
The McCain campaign sharply criticized Bauer's characterization of the meeting.
It was in June 2007 when Bauer authored a piece in Huffington Post regarding Vice President Dick Cheney's aide, Scooter Libby, arguing that liberals should not oppose a White House pardon because a pardon would draw President George W. Bush directly into the case, with the potential the "presidential fingerprints" could become politically explosive.

She's married to Robert Bauer, the chief of the political law group at Perkins Coie, the Seattle law firm hired by the White House to defend President Obama in court cases challenging his "natural born" citizenship status in the United States and thus, his eligibility under the U.S. Constitution to be president.
Dunn is targeting Fox News with criticisms emanating from the administration that it isn't even a news network, while Bauer has done his best to prevent the American public from seeing a wide range of President Obama's records that could prove, or disprove, his eligibility to occupy the Oval Office under the Constitution's requirement that the president be a "natural born" citizen.

Again, Bauer filed a complaint with the FEC alleging that the union-funded television campaign the American Leadership Project planned to run in Indiana against Obama was illegal under federal election laws.
In addition to representing Obama on eligibility cases, Bauer also is hired as legal counsel to represent the president in the criminal probe going on into the activities of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Last year Bauer was at the center of the controversy over Obama's decision to reverse course on his promise to accept pubic financing for his presidential campaign after a meeting with Sen. John McCain's attorney, Trevor Potter, when Bauer claimed McCain did not want to reach a compromise on the issue. The McCain campaign sharply criticized Bauer's characterization of the meeting.

Democrats lock Republicans out of committee room

Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-N.Y.) locked Republicans out of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee room to keep them from meeting when Democrats aren’t present.
Towns’ action came after repeated public ridicule from the leading Republican on the committee, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), over Towns’s failure to launch an investigation into Countrywide Mortgage’s reported sweetheart deals to VIPs.
For months Towns has refused Republican requests to subpoena records in the case. Last Thursday Committee Republicans, led by Issa, were poised to force an open vote on the subpoenas at a Committee mark-up meeting. The mark-up was abruptly canceled. Only Republicans showed up while Democrats chairs remained empty.
Republicans charged that Towns canceled the meeting to avoid the subpoena vote. Democrats first claimed the mark-up was canceled due to a conflict with the Financial Services Committee. Later they said it was abandoned after a disagreement among Democratic members on whether to subpoena records on the mortgage industry’s political contributions to Republicans.
A GOP committee staffer captured video of Democrats leaving their separate meeting in private chambers after the mark-up was supposed to have begun. He spliced the video to other footage of the Democrats’ empty chairs at the hearing room, set it to the tune of “Hit the Road, Jack” and posted it on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee’s minority webpage, where it remained as of press time.
Towns’s staffers told Republicans they were not happy about the presence of the video camera in the hearing room when they were not present. Issa’s spokesman said the Democrats readily acknowledged to Republicans that they changed the locks in retaliation to the videotape of the Democrats’ absence from the business meeting even though committee rules allow meetings to be taped.
"It's not surprising that they would choose to retaliate given the embarrassment we caused by catching them in a lie on tape,” said Issa spokesman Kurt Bardella. “If only they
would use their creative energy to do some actual oversight rather than resorting to immature tactics, but I guess we're getting some insight into what lengths they'll go to avoid addressing the Countrywide VIP issue."
Towns’s office said in a statement the locks were changed on Republicans "because they don't know how to behave." As for the video the GOP made, Towns's office pointed out: "The minority is using taxpayer dollars to make these campaign style videos." Bardella replied: "It's also those same taxpayer dollars that paid for them to sit in a room while they came up with an excuse to cancel the mark-up -- what exactly do they do all day?"
The partisan sniping recalls a similarly bitter name-calling match between House Republicans and Democrats on the Ways and Means Committee in 2003 when Republicans controlled the majority and former Rep. Bill Thomas (R-Calif.) chaired the panel. The episode ended in Thomas, known for his acerbic tongue, summoning the Capitol Police to evict an outraged gaggle of Democratic colleagues from a library in the Longworth House office building.
The committee had convened that morning to consider a bipartisan bill that would revise the nation's pension and retirement-saving system.
Democrats objected when Thomas brought up a 90-page substitute measure that had been released shortly before midnight the night before. Democrats said they needed more time to read it. Thomas disagreed.
In response, Democrats objected to a normally perfunctory motion to dispense with the reading of the dense legislation. A clerk obligingly began reading it line by line.
Democrats departed to a library just off the main hearing room, leaving only Rep. Fortney "Pete" Stark (D-Calif.) to prevent the Republicans from obtaining unanimous consent to skip the reading. After a few minutes, Thomas asked again for the unanimous consent, and instantly brought down his gavel. Stark told reporters he had objected, but Thomas had replied, "You're too late."
Even before Thomas gaveled the reading to an end, he had directed staff to call the Capitol Police to remove the Democrats form the library.
Countrywide, now owned by Bank of America, was reported to have given VIP loans and treatment to lawmakers and officials at the federal and local level who were in a position to influence policy affecting the mortgage giant. Issa has repeatedly reminded Committee Democrats that Bank of America officials had said they would turn over records on the VIP program – but only in response to a subpoena.
Towns, who received a mortgage loan from Countrywide but insists he was not part of the VIP program, has said he declined to launch an investigation because he does not want to interfere with an ongoing Justice Department probe into the matter.
