Kenyan government imposes gag order on Obama family

The Kenyan government has barred unapproved contacts between the media and President-elect Barack Obama's extended family.

Family members will be required to receive permission from the government before making any public statements about their famous relative, according to the Nairobi Star.

"We are doing this because we want to ensure better flow of information," Athman Said, an under-secretary in the Ministry of Heritage, told the Obama family in Kogelo.

"The government has decided that you should inform its officers who will be based here if you want to address the media."

Journalists wishing to speak with the family must first be approved by the government ....

This is not the first attempt to block press interest in President-elect Obama's African connections.

Prior to the U.S. election, WND senior staff reporter Jerome R. Corsi was detained in Kenya while investigating Obama's close ties to the nation's prime minister, Raila Odinga.

The Kenyan official who reportedly orchestrated the detention was Odinga himself, according to WND sources inside Kenya.

Corsi, whose recent book, "The Obama Nation," raised questions about the Democrat when he was a candidate for president, had scheduled a news conference in Nairobi to discuss his discoveries during his visit this fall.

However, he was detained by immigration officials and held without food for much of a day until he was escorted onto his already-booked flight leaving Kenya with the sendoff, "See you in hell."

Corsi had earlier seen the flow of information stymied by the Obama campaign itself:

"I was able to interview Obama's uncle, Sayid Obama, the brother of Obama's father, when I was doing the research for 'The Obama Nation,'" Corsi said. "But Auma Obama, Obama's half-sister, declined an interview by telephone, telling me that the Obama campaign had advised the Obama family not to speak with me, either from the United States by phone, or in person in Kenya."....

Under-secretary Said, who informed the Obamas they were muzzled, announced the Obama Cultural Home project, which will include a museum, a gallery and a leadership center in the family's town of Kogelo. A video featuring Mama Sarah Obama, the president-elect's step-grandmother, will relate the Obamas' family history. Said added that the Ministry of Heritage is negotiating with the U.S. government to display Obama's publications. ....

New York Office Building used by Iranian regime, seized by Feds

By Walid Phares

The US Government seized control last Wednesday of a New York City office building partially owned by a company with ties to the Iranian government. The Treasury and Justice Departments move is aimed to end a flow of cash used to help Iran's program of nuclear weapons. The seizure is raising troubling questions.

The tower, situated on New York's Fifth Avenue, was built by an Iranian non-profit group in the 1970s. Federal officials say that the ownership of the building has evolved in an attempt to hide the stake held by an Iranian state-owned bank. The US alleges that Assa Corporation, which owns the building, is a front for Bank Melli, which facilitates the funding of nuclear materials for the Iranian regime. US authorities say that Bank Melli is involved in the Assa Corp. management of the Fifth Avenue facility. According to reports, rental income was sent back to Iran. But the designation does not interfere with the business and other activities of the tenants of 650 Fifth Avenue. In 2007, the Bush Administration froze Bank Melli's assets in the United States. The FBI seized two Assa's bank accounts holding $3.1 million.

According to Government sources Bank Melli handles funds for the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (Pasdaran) and its Qods Forces, which in turn fund Hezbollah, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad as well as some activities of the Taliban in Afghanistan.

This move raised several national security questions in the media and within the counter terrorism community:

1) Can the ownership of a building in Manhattan by entities controlled by the Iranian regime lead to a potential use of the facility by Terrorists or - in more dramatic circumstances- to sneak a dirty bomb or a nuke?

2) Should we be surprised that the Iranian intelligence and agencies operate such a facility in New York or in other cities in the US?

In an interview with Fox News I made the several of the following points:

a. We shouldn't be surprised at all that the Iranian regime is trying to have access to such assets. Their strategy is to have as many of these assets in the U.S. The chain begins in Tehran where the tasked agencies try to build a map of similar locations in America for future potential operations.

b. The goal for such locations is multiple. The Terrorist component could include hideouts for operatives (as in Mumbai) or worse, a location to deploy dirty bombs or more.

c. The United States and other democracies have an open space for trade. Hence Iranian funded networks can own, co-own or manage these assets. These locations can be used by other elements than those who manages the locations.

d. Even though these types of assets can be used in the future, we need to keep in mind that its took some time for the preparation for 9/11 or Mumbai. Hence if the Iranian regime is indeed managing these assets now, it would be to have it handy when and if it needs to use them in the future.

e. The New York Law Enforcement agencies and authorities are among the best in the nation and worldwide. They do have an understanding of the enemy's strategies. Hence they are on top of it in as much as possible. But there is no fully secure system against Terrorism.

Islam Waging Financial Jihad?

By Dale Hurd

CBNNews.com - U.S. dependence on oil has led to an unprecedented transfer of wealth to the Muslim nations of the Middle East. And now it seems they are using that money to advance an Islamic agenda.

It's called Sharia-compliant finance. Sharia is best known in the West for the punishments it requires, including stoning for adultery, amputation for theft and death to those who leave Islam. Sharia finance claims to not allow profit from interest or risk, or from prohibited items such as pork or alcohol.

It would be one thing if Sharia finance was just another way for Muslims to invest their money, but critics of Sharia-compliant finance say it's a whole lot more than that.

"Sharia finance is a piece of what I call the stealth jihad," Frank Gaffney of the Center for Security Policy said. He is one of the chief critics of Sharia Finance in Washington.

"It espouses, it embraces and it is designed to help advance a program, Sharia, that is seditious; that requires the destruction of our constitutional government," he added, calling it treason.

"It's about what its proponents have called financial jihad or jihad with money," he said.

Sharia Gains U.S. Support

Washington not only allows Sharia finance, the U.S. Treasury promotes it. Last month the Treasury Department sponsored a seminar called Islamic Finance 101.

Many banks, brokerages and insurers are also trying to lure money from the Middle East by offering Sharia-compliant products. That includes AIG, which went belly up and was taken over by U.S. government to the tune of $150 billion. That takeover means the U.S. government and taxpayers now have a stake in Sharia finance.

The Dow Jones Islamic Market Indexes was created for Sharia-compliant portfolios. It's advised by leading Muslim scholars.

Earlier this year, one of those advisors, Sheikh Taqi Usmani, was quietly removed from his position, after it was learned that he thought Muslims should engage in aggressive military jihad "to establish the supremacy of Islam" worldwide.

Muslims Thriving Off U.S. Recession

The recent market meltdown in the West has the Muslim world believing that now is their time.

"The collapse of the capitalist system based on usury and paper…is proof that it is in crisis and shows that the Islamic economic philosophy is holding up," leading Islamic scholar Dr. Yusef Al-Qaradawi said.

"All riches are ours," he added. "The Islamic nation has all or nearly all the oil and we have an economic philosophy that no one else has."

Al-Qaradaw urges Muslims to "profit from the crisis to bring about the triumph of the (Islamic) nation, which holds the spiritual and material resources for victory."

Marshall Sana, Islamic expert at the Institute for the Study of Islam and Christianity, a part of Barnabas Fund, added that "at the conclusion of the recent hajj in Mecca the Grand Mufti talked about the failure of capitalism. That we've seen the end of communism and we're seeing the failure of capitalism. The answer is Islamic finance. He said Sharia finance."

Sana says Sharia finance is actually a distortion of Korannic teachings, and was traditionally understood to prohibit usury rather than interest. He says it was not widely practiced by Muslims until recent decades, and believes it is being promoted now as a financial weapon against the West.

"It's war footing," he said. "And it's setting up not only a separatism and a segregation, but it's attaching it to Sharia law, which we all know is a supremacist ideology."

"It has inequality built into it, between woman and men and Muslims and non-Muslims," he added. "If you look at the literature and you look at the internal dialogue, the end is supremacy. The end is controlling institutions. It's setting up an Islamic economy and an Islamic economy is to be the world economy. "

Calls Against Sharia

A lawsuit was filed Dec. 15 in federal court against the Treasury Department and the Federal Reserve board for supporting Sharia in violation of the First Amendment. The suit also seeks to stop any bailout money from going to AIG.

Gaffney is outraged that the government and Wall Street are welcoming Sharia finance.

"Today it's happening at the Treasury Department under the Bush administration, to say nothing of what will happen under the Obama administration-- actively promoting the activity," he said. "It's madness. It's reckless. I think if most Americans knew what was going on here, if they knew what was at stake, would be horrified."

Is The President Above The Law?

(Compiler's note: A must read article. We are likely to hear more about these charges in days to come.)

from The Chattanooga.Com

Unknown to many in the mainstream press, the United States Senate issues a bipartisan report this week on detainee abuses in the war on terror. The report, authored by Sen. Levin (D) and Sen. McCain (R), verifies that human rights have been violated and lays blame for the illegal torture of prisoners at the feet of Donald Rumsfeld and other senior administration officials.

The details contained in the report are appalling. Along with assault, sleep deprivation, denial of religious rights, sexual humiliation, and other physical torture; the report contends numerous instances of homicide occurred. The President, in his ever increasing aloof attitude for established law, decided that he and his military could treat prisoners any way they deemed necessary: despite the law. They did this in spite of U.S. law against the torture of prisoners in U.S. custody, and in spite of the Geneva Convention.

Is the President above the law? Not even 20 years ago a Texas sheriff was given 10 years in a federal penitentiary for "water-boarding" prisoners in an attempt to extract a confession. Vice President Dick Cheney, in his ever increasing criminal attitude (this man has never served his country and took five deferments during the Vietnam War), made public statements in the past few days in support of the torture of prisoners. These men act just like mobsters; arrogant, no culture, petty, and little respect for established law.

When are our U.S. attorney's going to stand up to the plate and bring criminal charges against these men? After all, all U.S. attorney's are sworn to protect and defend the US Constitution. The Senate report claims that the actions of the Administration brought great harm to our national security, ruined our "high road" image around the world, and gave extremists motivation to carry out more terror attacks. These men have not only ruined the credibility of the 'very' country that authored the Nuremberg Trials that convicted high ranking Nazis, but by their ignorant actions they possibly have ensure the torture of captured U.S. military personnel.

The Administration has consistently claimed that abuses were the work of lower ranking military personnel. Some of these military personnel have been tried for their crimes. This is a travesty. The men who should be tried and sent to prison are the President, Vice President, Secretary of Defense, and the former Attorney General. We should look a lot further too. Congressman Zach Wamp has not made one public statement condemning the use of torture on prisoners. Neither has Sen. Alexander. Sen. Corker is a late-comer to the "Great Game," so he narrowly escapes incrimination. We can only imagine what Congressman Wamp's attitude would be on extracting confessions if being elected governor of Tennessee.

I distinctly remember Congressman Wamp being caught up in "Islamophobia" and making several hysterical public statements demonizing Islamic radicals. The tone used by Congressman Wamp in his statements was one of fear and we don't need a chief executive of our State of Tennessee who is easily scared. People make serious mistakes when they are in fear. Fear pushes us to lash out or demonize those that scare us. Once the enemy is demonized; the disregard for due process and human rights soon follows.

I am sure there will be many comments condemning my remarks. They will most likely come from those who have never served their country in the military, don't understand how important national image is, or those who are just sadists. I would remind those people that we've already fought one war (the Revolution) because the King was torturing our citizen's. I remember.

The "liberal" press has yet to give this story adequate coverage.

Stemming the Rise of Islamic Extremism in Bangladesh

Sajeeb A. Wazed is an adviser to Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and President of the Awami League, the largest and oldest political party in Bangladesh. He has been a key negotiator for the Awami League on several occasions, most recently in the negotiations for the restoration of democracy in Bangladesh with the present military government. He has a Master's in Public Administration from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.

Carl J. Ciovacco graduated from the Kennedy School of Government with a Masters of Public Policy in International Security and Political Economy. His recent thesis on Al Qaeda's media strategy and was written for the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point. He received his Bachelor of Science in International Relations from West Point and served as an Army officer in Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Bangladesh has been a secular Muslim state since its independence from Pakistan and founding by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1971. While its short history has been full of military coup d’états, it has always returned to its roots as a secular democratic state. There are, however, troubling new signs of a shift towards a growing Islamism that could jeopardize the sanctity of secularism in the country. While the governing construct’s legitimacy is suffering politically from the past two years of emergency military rule, Islamism may be the biggest threat to the country’s Constitution and secular underpinnings. As elections are scheduled for December 18th and the two major political parties jostle over the country’s future, each party’s vision for the proper mix of Islam and government will be at the forefront. Rahman’s Awami League has long been the standard bearer of secularism and if elected, it could roll back the growing tide of Islamism in Bangladesh. The Awami League must, however, implement certain changes to proactively check this Islamism if it hopes to secure long-lasting secularism and democracy. If successful, an Awami League-led Bangladesh could be the global example of secular governance in a Muslim country. .... click on the title above for the balance of a three page article.

Online Jihadists Plan for 'Invading Facebook'

By Noah Shachtman

Online jihadists have already used YouTube, blogs and other social media to spread their propaganda. Now, a group of internet Islamic extremists is putting together a plan for "invading Facebook."

"We can use Facebook to fight the media," notes a recent posting on the extremist al-Faloja forum, translated by Jihadica.com. "We can post media on Facebook that shows the Crusader losses."

"We have already had great success in raiding YouTube," the poster adds. "American politicians have used Facebook to get votes, like the house slave Obama."

Groups like al-Qaida were pioneering users of the internet — to train, share ideas and organize. But some observers, like George Washington University professor Marc Lynch, see a reluctance to embrace Web 2.0 tools like Facebook. "One of the biggest problems for a virtual network like AQ today is that it needs to build connections between its members while protecting itself from its enemies. That's a filtering problem: How do you get your people in, and keep intelligence agents out?" he asks.

But as Jihadica.com author and West Point Combating Terrorism Center fellow William McCants notes, the proposed Facebook invasion "is not an attempt to replicate [existing] social networks." Instead, "the members of the campaign want to exploit existing networks of people who are hostile to them and presumably they will adopt new identities once they have posted their material."

The al-Faloja poster suggests seven "brigades" work together within Facebook. One will distribute videos and writing of so-called "martyrs." Another will spread military training material. Most of them will work in Arabic, presumably. But one of the units will focus just on spread English-language propaganda through Facebook.

AP study finds $1.6B went to bailed-out bank execs

(Compiler's note: I just report, you decide ...)

By FRANK BASS and RITA BEAMISH

Banks that are getting taxpayer bailouts awarded their top executives nearly $1.6 billion in salaries, bonuses, and other benefits last year, an Associated Press analysis reveals.

The rewards came even at banks where poor results last year foretold the economic crisis that sent them to Washington for a government rescue. Some trimmed their executive compensation due to lagging bank performance, but still forked over multimillion-dollar executive pay packages.

Benefits included cash bonuses, stock options, personal use of company jets and chauffeurs, home security, country club memberships and professional money management, the AP review of federal securities documents found.

The total amount given to nearly 600 executives would cover bailout costs for many of the 116 banks that have so far accepted tax dollars to boost their bottom lines.

Rep. Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services committee and a long-standing critic of executive largesse, said the bonuses tallied by the AP review amount to a bribe "to get them to do the jobs for which they are well paid in the first place.

"Most of us sign on to do jobs and we do them best we can," said Frank, a Massachusetts Democrat. "We're told that some of the most highly paid people in executive positions are different. They need extra money to be motivated!"

The AP compiled total compensation based on annual reports that the banks file with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The 116 banks have so far received $188 billion in taxpayer help. Among the findings:

_The average paid to each of the banks' top executives was $2.6 million in salary, bonuses and benefits.

_Lloyd Blankfein, president and chief executive officer of Goldman Sachs, took home nearly $54 million in compensation last year. The company's top five executives received a total of $242 million.

This year, Goldman will forgo cash and stock bonuses for its seven top-paid executives. They will work for their base salaries of $600,000, the company said. Facing increasing concern by its own shareholders on executive payments, the company described its pay plan last spring as essential to retain and motivate executives "whose efforts and judgments are vital to our continued success, by setting their compensation at appropriate and competitive levels." Goldman spokesman Ed Canaday declined to comment beyond that written report.

The New York-based company on Dec. 16 reported its first quarterly loss since it went public in 1999. It received $10 billion in taxpayer money on Oct. 28.

_Even where banks cut back on pay, some executives were left with seven- or eight-figure compensation that most people can only dream about. Richard D. Fairbank, the chairman of Capital One Financial Corp. (COF) (COF), took a $1 million hit in compensation after his company had a disappointing year, but still got $17 million in stock options. The McLean, Va.-based company received $3.56 billion in bailout money on Nov. 14.

_John A. Thain, chief executive officer of Merrill Lynch, topped all corporate bank bosses with $83 million in earnings last year. Thain, a former chief operating officer for Goldman Sachs, took the reins of the company in December 2007, avoiding the blame for a year in which Merrill lost $7.8 billion. Since he began work late in the year, he earned $57,692 in salary, a $15 million signing bonus and an additional $68 million in stock options.

Like Goldman, Merrill got $10 billion from taxpayers on Oct. 28.

The AP review comes amid sharp questions about the banks' commitment to the goals of the Troubled Assets Relief Program (TARP), a law designed to buy bad mortgages and other troubled assets. Last month, the Bush administration changed the program's goals, instructing the Treasury Department to pump tax dollars directly into banks in a bid to prevent wholesale economic collapse.

The program set restrictions on some executive compensation for participating banks, but did not limit salaries and bonuses unless they had the effect of encouraging excessive risk to the institution. Banks were barred from giving golden parachutes to departing executives and deducting some executive pay for tax purposes.

Banks that got bailout funds also paid out millions for home security systems, private chauffeured cars, and club dues. Some banks even paid for financial advisers. Wells Fargo of San Francisco, which took $25 billion in taxpayer bailout money, gave its top executives up to $20,000 each to pay personal financial planners.

At Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (BK), chief executive Robert P. Kelly's stipend for financial planning services came to $66,748, on top of his $975,000 salary and $7.5 million bonus. His car and driver cost $178,879. Kelly also received $846,000 in relocation expenses, including help selling his home in Pittsburgh and purchasing one in Manhattan, the company said.

Goldman Sachs' tab for leased cars and drivers ran as high as $233,000 per executive. The firm told its shareholders this year that financial counseling and chauffeurs are important in giving executives more time to focus on their jobs.

JPMorgan Chase chairman James Dimon ran up a $211,182 private jet travel tab last year when his family lived in Chicago and he was commuting to New York. The company got $25 billion in bailout funds.

Banks cite security to justify personal use of company aircraft for some executives. But Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., questioned that rationale, saying executives visit many locations more vulnerable than the nation's security-conscious commercial air terminals.

Sherman, a member of the House Financial Services Committee, said pay excesses undermine development of good bank economic policies and promote an escalating pay spiral among competing financial institutions - something particularly hard to take when banks then ask for rescue money.

He wants them to come before Congress, like the automakers did, and spell out their spending plans for bailout funds.

"The tougher we are on the executives that come to Washington, the fewer will come for a bailout," he said.
